Yttrium belongs to the group of rare earths.

This molecule is used in its stable (i.e. non-radioactive) form for the operation of certain lasers called YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet laser). This type of laser is mainly used by ophthalmologists, pulmonologists, and gastroenterologists.

In rheumatology, yttrium is used in its form radioactive, (yttrium 90) to practice synoviorthesesThis is the treatment of an inflammatory joint condition, using an injection of a product into the joint. The aim of this injection is to destroy the diseased synovium (membrane lining the inside of the joint).

Garnet is a naturally occurring mineral of great hardness.
