Along with transvestism (adopting the clothing and behavior of the opposite sex), transsexualism, which affects men more than women, is one of the two aspects of gender identity disorders.
Generalities
The causes of transsexualism are currently unknown, although some avenues have been put forward (genetic and psychiatric).
A man or woman with transsexualism has the number and quality of chromosomes corresponding to their genetic sex.
They nevertheless have a feeling (which some describe as delusional) of belonging to the opposite sex, leading to an absolute desire to change sex.
Individuals with transsexualism adopt the habits and social behaviors of the gender that is not their own. Some even decide to undergo surgery to acquire the gender considered their own.
This operation, which must be decided after a thorough analysis of each case, and even a psychoanalysis, consists of:
For a man:
- Penile ablation
- Removal of the testicles
- Construction of an artificial vagina
For a woman
- Breast removal
- Construction of an artificial penis
In all cases :
- Administration of hormones (males for women, females for men)
