Pubis

Definition

Definition

The pubis is the anatomical area of the pelvis, located in front of and above the coccyx bone.

Anatomy

The coccyx bone is made up of a body which participates in the formation of the pubic symphysis and of inferior and superior branches entering into the formation of the anterior part of the acetabulum.

By extension, the pubis designates the anatomical area located at the bottom of the abdomen just above the penis and covered with hair from puberty.

Symptoms

Symptoms

Pubalgia (pain located in the pubic area) is the result of inflammation of the ligaments at this level, causing tendonitis. Many muscles of the abdomen and thigh are inserted at this level. Violent trauma can also fracture the pubic area. Sometimes, after a direct impact, anatomical lesions of the viscera located below, such as the bladder or genitals, are observed.

physiology

The pubic symphysis is the joint located on the midline of the two pubic bones. Cartilage associated with a ligament as well as a fibrous sleeve are part of the constitution of this pubic joint which is fixed. However, at the time of childbirth this joint is likely to widen, thus allowing the passage of the fetus into the birth canal.

The mons pubis is the term for the mass of fat that covers the pubic area, also known as the mons pubis in women. The hair on the surface of the pubis is called pubic hair, and appears at puberty.
