Definition
Accelerin is a factor synthesized by the liver which intervenes in blood coagulation, by accelerating the transformation of prothrombin to thrombin.
It is also called factor VI.
Generalities
La thrombin has the ability to transform the fibrinogen en fibrin.
Fibrinogen, synthesized by the liver, is the precursor of nature protein from the fibrin.
Fibrin is a proteine which is not soluble and which is the origin of the blood clot: it results from the splitting of the fibrinogen under the action of thrombin during blood clotting.
Proaccelerin, a close relative of accelerin, was discovered by Owren in 1947. It is a pseudoglobulin (close to globulin: a variety of protein) which is thermolabile (fragile to heat) and is involved in the mechanism of blood clotting.
It is manufactured by the liver, and exists in the plasma in this form:
- Owren's Factor V
- Ware and Seegers ac-globulin plasma
- Accelerator factor by Fanti and Nance
- Quick's labile factor A
- Honorato's cofactor of thromboplastin
- Stefanini plasma prothrombin conversion factor
Accelerin-related pathologies are studied in hematology, and more specifically in coagulology.
Proaccelerin acts on thromboplastin already activated by proconvertin, and accelerates the transformation of prothrombin into thrombin.
