The glycogenic acanthosis of theesophagus is a benign lesion characterized by a transformation, acquired with aging, of the mucous membrane of the esophagus, that is to say the layer of cells that lines this organ. It occurs from the age of 50 and its evolution does not lead to a cancerous transformation.
The X-ray shows the presence of rounded nodules not exceeding 10 mm and diffuse involvement of the esophageal wall.
Glycogenic acanthosis of the esophagus should not be confused with esophageal candidiasis, esophageal myelomatous lesion, multiple papillomas, and the syndrome acanthosis nigricans the hamartomas and the syndrome of Cowden may also possibly be mistaken for glycogenic acanthosis of the esophagus.
