Some drugs like bromocriptine are used to prevent or inhibit physiological lactation for medical reasons: either immediately postpartum (after childbirth) in which case we speak of ablactation, or late postpartum, in which case we speak of weaning. Bromocriptine acts by inhibiting the secretion of prolactin, which is a protein hormone produced by the pituitary gland, particularly its anterior lobe (part of the pituitary gland located at the front). The pituitary gland, a gland located in the center of the brain, below the hypothalamus to which it is connected, is the "conductor" gland of the body (it regulates the other hormones in the body).
