L'tubo-ovarian abscess (in English tubo-ovarian abscess) is a complication of any infection that starts in the uterus or the adnexa of the uterus, as occurs during salpingitis for example. Usually the germ involved is Neisseria gonorrhea, or Chlamydia trachomatis.

Symptoms of a tubo-ovarian abscess include:

The examination sometimes makes it possible to highlight a mass syndrome on a terrain which sometimes appears painful in an elective manner.

Additional examination

Additional examinations and more particularly thescan (which is the reference examination) makes it possible to definitively highlight the tubo-ovarian abscess which appears in an oblong and compartmentalized form with irregular walls.

Complications that may occur after tubo-ovarian abscess are:

  • The ectopic pregnancies (pregnancies occurring outside the uterus).
  • A decrease in fertility.
  • Pelvic pain that is characteristically chronic.
  • Un hydrosalpinx.

IUDs increase this risk of infection, which occurs mainly in young women who have not yet had children, or who have several sexual partners, and this in the first months following insertion. IUD.
