L'Bezold's abscess (in English abscess of Bezold) is an abscess of the neck complicating an inflammation of the tip of the mastoid (bone lateral to the jaw) in an acute mode, that is to say of relatively rapid occurrence.

The mastoid is an eminence of thetemporal bone (bone located on the side of the skull), it is located behind the external auditory canal.

Symptoms of Bezold's abscess include:

  • Collection of pus generally located behind the ear, and filling the groove, then pushing the auricle forward.
  • Mastoiditis with hyperthermia (fever).
  • Alteration of general condition.
  • Break in the weight curve in infants.
  • Discharge from the ear (otorrhea) consistently.

The CT scan shows the abscess in the posterior cervical region and between the vertebrae.

Mastoid involvement is also easily recognized using this medical imaging.
