Researchers from the University of Buffalo in New York, USA, conducted a study to analyze the link between fruit and vegetable consumption and tobacco addiction. The conclusion may seem fanciful, but the results tend to demonstrate that increasing fruit and vegetable consumption could help people quit smoking.

1 American smokers aged over 000 were surveyed about their smoking habits, their nicotine addiction levels and their fruit and vegetable consumption.
The results showed that smokers eat less balanced meals and Those who eat a significant amount of fruits and vegetables are likely to quit smoking more easily.

Researchers put forward four possible explanations:

  1. Previous research has shown that increased fruit and vegetable consumption can change the taste of cigarettes, making it less pleasant.
  2. The sugars in fruits can boost levels of Dopamine. Nicotine also stimulates dopamine, so the urge to smoke would be less felt.
  3. Consumption of fruits and vegetables would tend to reduce the risk of depression often associated with resuming smoking.
  4. The feeling of hunger can be confused with a craving for a cigarette. Fruits and vegetables play a very important role in satiety : they could therefore avoid confusing the desire to eat with the desire to smoke.

However, it cannot be said today that eating a large quantity of fruits and vegetables would definitely lead to stopping smoking.
