Nucleosome

Definition

Definition

Nucleosomes are fundamental units of chromatin, which resemble a fine network of irregular coloration running throughout the nucleoplasm (liquid bathing the elements constituting the nucleus of the cell).

physiology

Chromatin contains roughly equal amounts of DNA (genetic material) and histone ( globular protein = a type of protein). It forms the framework of the cell nucleus, which is visible under a light microscope.

Nucleosomes are spherical clusters of eight histones that resemble beads on a string, connected by a DNA molecule that wraps around each of these clusters.

Histone is characterized by simple basic proteins ( holoproteins ), located inside the cell nucleus, and linked to deoxyribonucleic acid in nucleosomes.

It plays a repressive role in the transmission of the genetic message: regulating genes (units made up of DNA located within chromosomes, which preserve and transmit the hereditary characteristics of living organisms). For example, in a cell that is not undergoing division ( mitosis ), changes in the shape of histones expose different segments of DNA (genes), and are then able to give instructions (specifications) for the production of proteins.
